Amalfi Coast cliffside village by sea

Discover the Amalfi Coast — Italy's Most Iconic Luxury Seaside Escape

Cliffside hotels, private yachts, Michelin dining, and unforgettable Mediterranean views.

Overview

Fifty kilometres of cliffs, lemons, and old-world glamour

The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of near-vertical shoreline south of Naples where pastel villages cling to limestone cliffs above impossibly blue water. Positano cascades to a pebble beach, Ravello floats high in the hills with its music festival and belvederes, and Amalfi itself keeps the cathedral and cloisters of a once-mighty maritime republic.

Luxury here is architectural and inherited rather than manufactured — converted monasteries and palazzi, terraces hung over the sea, dinner served under lemon pergolas, and a wooden gozzo waiting at the jetty to take you to Capri for the afternoon.

Best time to visit

  • May – June: warm days, blooming hillsides, and the sea just turning swimmable.
  • September – October: our favorite — warm water, softer light, fewer crowds.
  • July – August: hot, glamorous, and very busy; book hotels and boats months ahead.
  • November – March: most hotels and restaurants close for the season.

Why it's perfect

  • Cliffside hotels with terraces and pools suspended over the sea.
  • Some of Italy's finest dining, from Michelin stars to family trattorias.
  • Capri, Ischia, and hidden coves an easy private boat ride away.
  • Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Naples within a short drive.
  • Beauty that needs no filter in every direction, all day long.

Top Luxury Hotels

Four resorts we love

Le Sirenuse

Positano. The coast's most storied address — a former summer palazzo above the bay, with majolica floors, Franco's Bar at sunset, and Michelin-starred La Sponda lit by hundreds of candles.

Hotel Caruso, A Belmond Hotel

Ravello. An 11th-century palace 1,000 feet above the sea, home to the most famous infinity pool in Italy and gardens that seem to float over the Gulf of Salerno.

Il San Pietro di Positano

Positano. Carved into the cliff face with a private beach club reached by lift through the rock — quiet, discreet, and impeccably run by the same family for generations.

Monastero Santa Rosa

Conca dei Marini. A restored 17th-century monastery with just twenty rooms, a terraced spa, and a cliff-edge pool that ranks among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.

Travel Tips

What to know before you go

How long to stay

Five to seven nights is the sweet spot — enough for two bases, a full day at sea, and a morning at Pompeii. Ten nights lets you add Capri or Ischia without rushing a single lunch.

Where to stay

  • Positano: the iconic view, boutiques, beach clubs, and the liveliest evenings.
  • Ravello: high, cool, and serene — gardens, concerts, and the best panoramas.
  • Amalfi & Atrani: history, the cathedral, and easy ferry connections.
  • Praiano & Conca: quieter cliffside hideaways between the headline towns.

What to pack

  • Elegant resort wear — dinners here lean smart, not casual.
  • Flat sandals and trainers; the coast is all steps and cobbles.
  • Water shoes for pebble beaches and rocky swim platforms.
  • A light wrap for breezy terraces and boat rides after sunset.
  • Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and a hat for open-deck days.

Getting there

Fly into Naples International (NAP), the closest gateway, with easy connections through Rome, Milan, and most European hubs. Rome Fiumicino (FCO) works too, with a high-speed train south to Naples in about an hour.

From Naples it is roughly 90 minutes by private car along the coastal road to Positano, or 30 minutes by helicopter to Ravello and Praiano. In summer, arriving by private boat from Naples or Sorrento is faster, cooler, and far more beautiful — we arrange every transfer, skipper, and driver.
