Discover the Maldives — The World's Most Iconic Luxury Beach Escape

Overwater villas, turquoise lagoons, private island resorts, and unforgettable sunsets.

Overview

A thousand islands, and almost no crowd

The Maldives is a chain of some 1,200 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, gathered into 26 natural atolls. Barely a fraction are inhabited, and many of the rest hold a single resort — which is why a stay here feels less like a hotel and more like borrowing an island for a week.

The appeal is simple and hard to replicate: water so clear the shadow of your villa falls onto the seabed, reefs that begin at the end of your steps, and a rhythm of days set by tides rather than schedules.

Best time to visit

  • November – April: the dry season — calm seas, clear skies, peak rates.
  • May – October: green season — short warm showers, softer prices, superb diving.
  • August – November: manta and whale-shark season in the southern atolls.

Why it's perfect

  • One resort per island — genuine, uninterrupted privacy.
  • Overwater villas with direct lagoon access and private pools.
  • Warm 82–86°F (28–30°C) water year-round.
  • World-class reefs a few strokes from the shore.
  • Service pitched at the very top of the global scale.

Travel Tips

What to know before you go

How long to stay

Seven nights is the sweet spot: two to unwind, three to dive and explore, two to do nothing at all. Five nights works if you fly direct; ten if you split two atolls — often one overwater island and one beach island.

What to pack

  • Linen and light cotton — evenings are warm and dress codes are relaxed.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen; many resorts now require it.
  • Your own mask and fins if you snorkel often.
  • A rash guard for long reef swims, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Modest cover-ups for a Malé or local-island visit.

Getting there

All arrivals come through Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé, with convenient connections via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Singapore and Colombo.

From Malé you continue by seaplane (20–45 minutes, daylight hours only), by domestic flight plus speedboat for the far atolls, or by direct speedboat for nearer islands. Resorts arrange every transfer — plan a daytime arrival so you reach the island before dark.

Who it's perfect for

The Maldives suits a certain kind of traveler

  • Honeymooners and couples celebrating an anniversary in absolute privacy
  • Milestone birthdays and retirement escapes that deserve the once-in-a-lifetime version
  • Couples looking for barefoot luxury rather than nightlife
  • Divers and snorkelers chasing mantas, reef sharks and whale sharks
  • Anyone who wants a week where the only decision is which water to swim in
