Bora Bora bungalows and Mount Otemanu

Discover Bora Bora — The Crown Jewel of French Polynesia

Overwater bungalows, turquoise lagoons, private islands, and unforgettable romance.

Overview

A lagoon so blue it barely looks real

Bora Bora is the postcard that every other beach tries to live up to. A tiny island encircled by a coral reef and a lagoon of impossible turquoise, it rises from the sea beneath the brooding, beautiful silhouette of Mount Otemanu.

The magic here is in the water: warm, clear, and shallow enough that rays glide past your overwater deck and reef sharks circle the coral gardens. Days begin with coffee above the lagoon, move slowly through spa treatments and private picnics, and end with sunset turning the mountain gold.

Best time to visit

  • November – April: the dry season — calm skies, warm water, and peak conditions.
  • May – October: slightly cooler and breezier; excellent visibility for diving.
  • Year-round: tropical climate with temperatures rarely leaving the 79–86°F (26–30°C) range.

Why it's perfect

  • The world's most famous overwater bungalow destination.
  • A protected lagoon ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding.
  • Dramatic Mount Otemanu views from almost every resort.
  • Intimate, small-scale luxury with genuine Polynesian hospitality.
  • Easy combination with Tahiti and Moorea for a longer island journey.

Travel Tips

What to know before you go

How long to stay

Five nights is the classic Bora Bora stay: enough to settle into the rhythm of the lagoon, enjoy a few excursions, and still have time to do absolutely nothing. Seven nights is ideal if you are combining Tahiti or Moorea, and ten if you want to split two resorts for different perspectives of the mountain.

Where to stay

  • Overwater bungalow: the signature experience — sleep above the lagoon with direct access to the sea.
  • Beachfront villa: more space, private gardens, and direct sand access — excellent for longer stays.
  • Hilltop suite: rare panoramic views over the lagoon and Mount Otemanu.

What to pack

  • Light, breathable linen and swimwear for warm, humid days.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and polarised sunglasses.
  • Your own snorkel mask for spontaneous lagoon exploration.
  • Water shoes or reef-safe sandals for coral beaches.
  • One elegant resort outfit for sunset dinners.

Getting there

Most travelers fly into Faa'a International Airport (PPT) on Tahiti, then take a short domestic flight to Bora Bora (BOB). The flight lasts roughly 50 minutes and offers spectacular aerial views of the lagoon.

From Bora Bora Airport, your resort will meet you by boat and transfer you across the lagoon to your private motu. Helicopter transfers can also be arranged for a dramatic arrival.

For a longer journey, pair Bora Bora with Moorea or Taha'a, or arrive by private yacht and spend a week hopping between the Society Islands.
