Both places look like the photo you have saved on your phone. Water in five shades of blue. A villa on stilts. A quiet deck with nobody else in sight. So how do you choose?
The honest answer is that both are wonderful. They are also quite different once you are there. The journey, the scenery, the season and the style of each resort shape the trip more than most couples expect. Here is how they compare, in plain terms.
The short answer
Choose the Maldives if you want the most choice of resorts, the widest range of villa styles and some of the best snorkeling in the world, right from your deck. Choose Bora Bora if you want a shorter trip from the United States, a single dramatic lagoon and the view of Mount Otemanu that made overwater bungalows famous.
Getting there
For travelers from the United States, this is often the deciding factor.
Bora Bora is the easier journey. Air Tahiti Nui and Air France fly nonstop from Los Angeles to Papeete, Tahiti, in about eight hours. From there, a short Air Tahiti flight of about 50 minutes takes you to Bora Bora. Most resorts sit on small islets called motus, so the last step is a 15 to 30 minute boat ride. Door to door from Los Angeles, plan on 11 to 13 hours.
The Maldives is farther. There are no nonstop flights from the United States. Most couples connect through Doha, Dubai or Istanbul, and the full trip from New York runs about 21 hours. From the West Coast, allow closer to a full day. After you land in Malé, you reach your resort by speedboat, seaplane or a short domestic flight. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so an evening arrival can mean a night near the airport before you continue.
If you have two weeks, the Maldives journey is well worth it. If you have seven or eight nights, Bora Bora gives you more time on the water and less time in transit.
The scenery
Bora Bora is one island with one famous lagoon. At its center rises Mount Otemanu, a dark green volcanic peak. From many overwater bungalows, you wake up to that mountain across the water. It is a view you will not find anywhere else.
The Maldives has no mountains. It is a chain of low coral islands spread across the Indian Ocean. The beauty here is the water itself: wide, shallow lagoons, house reefs close to shore and a horizon that seems to go on forever. Each resort usually occupies its own island, so the feeling is private and self-contained.
The resorts and villas
Bora Bora has a small number of overwater resorts, which keeps things simple. The Maldives has well over a hundred resorts, from boutique hideaways to very large properties. That choice is a gift, but it also makes the right match more important.
A few Bora Bora resorts couples ask about most:
- Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. Overwater bungalows with plunge pools and some of the best views of Mount Otemanu on the island.
- The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort. Butler service and large overwater villas with strong mountain views.
- Conrad Bora Bora Nui. Set on its own motu, with generous overwater villas and a newer sunset-facing villa category.
- InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana Resort. On the main island near Matira Beach, a good choice if you want to walk out and explore.
One note for 2026 and 2027: the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa closed on June 1, 2026 for a major renovation. It is due to reopen in late 2027 as Regent Bora Bora, with all villas over the water.
A few Maldives resorts known for exceptional overwater villas:
- Soneva Jani, Noonu Atoll. Villas with private pools, retractable roofs for stargazing and a slide straight into the lagoon.
- Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, South Ari Atoll. Home to Ithaa, the undersea restaurant, and the Muraka residence with a bedroom below the sea.
- Gili Lankanfushi, North Malé Atoll. A quiet, barefoot resort about 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport, with every villa over the water.
- Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, Baa Atoll. In a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with strong marine programs and water villas with private pools.
Rates vary widely by season, villa type and meal plan. Your advisor will confirm current rates and any honeymoon offers for your dates.
Snorkeling and life on the water
Both destinations are made for time in the water. Bora Bora's lagoon is calm and clear, and resorts arrange outings to see rays and reef sharks. From mid-July through October, humpback whales visit the waters of French Polynesia.
The Maldives is one of the great places on earth to snorkel. Many resorts have a house reef you can swim to from your villa steps. In Baa Atoll, Hanifaru Bay draws large gatherings of manta rays from about May to November, with the biggest numbers from June or July into October. It is snorkel only, which suits couples who do not dive.
When to go
Bora Bora: The dry season runs from May to October, with sunny days around 82°F. June through August is the busiest time. April and November are quieter shoulder months. December to March is wetter and more humid.
Maldives: The dry season runs from November to April, with calm seas and clear skies. May to October brings more rain and humidity, though showers often pass quickly and this is the best time for mantas.
The seasons are almost opposite. That makes the choice easier if your wedding date is already set. A summer honeymoon points toward Bora Bora. A winter or early spring honeymoon points toward the Maldives.
Which one suits you?
Bora Bora may be the better match if:
- You have about a week and want less time in the air.
- The mountain view is the picture in your head.
- You are traveling between May and October.
The Maldives may be the better match if:
- You have ten days or more.
- You want the widest choice of villa styles and resorts.
- Snorkeling from your deck matters to you.
- You are traveling between November and April.
Some couples also combine Bora Bora with a few nights on Moorea or Tahiti. In the Maldives, a few couples split their stay between two resorts for a change of scene.
