The Best Private Island Resorts for a Milestone Birthday or Anniversary

Compare the best private island resorts for a milestone trip, from Soneva Jani and North Island to The Brando, with travel times and when to go.

By Luxe Beach Retreats·October 31, 2026

Some birthdays and anniversaries deserve more than a nice hotel. They call for a place where the island itself feels like yours.

A private island resort gives you that. There is usually one resort on the island, a small number of villas, and staff who learn your names on the first day. You arrive by seaplane, boat or small plane, and the rest of the world falls away.

Here are the private island resorts we recommend most for a milestone trip, across the destinations we know best.

What makes a private island resort different

On a large island, you share beaches, roads and restaurants with many other travelers. On a private island, the resort is the island. Guest numbers are low, so beaches stay quiet and service feels personal.

That calm comes with a longer journey, often a seaplane or a short flight after your international arrival. For a milestone trip, most couples find that the last leg becomes part of the memory.

Maldives: one island, one resort

The Maldives is built for this kind of stay. Almost every resort sits on its own island, but a few feel especially private.

Soneva Jani, Noonu Atoll. Twenty-five villas, most of them overwater, about 40 minutes by seaplane from Malé. Why we'd choose it: some villas have a water slide into the lagoon and a roof that opens for stargazing.

Cheval Blanc Randheli, Noonu Atoll. Forty-five villas, each with its own infinity pool, designed by Jean-Michel Gathy. Why we'd choose it: polished French service and a Guerlain spa for a celebration that feels truly grand.

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, Lhaviyani Atoll. Just 15 overwater residences, about 40 minutes by seaplane. Why we'd choose it: the "anything, anytime, anywhere" concept means meals and moments are shaped around you.

Gili Lankanfushi, North Malé Atoll. Forty-five overwater villas, only about 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport. Why we'd choose it: a "no news, no shoes" spirit and a private butler, without a seaplane transfer.

Seychelles: granite islands with wildlife

The Seychelles adds something the Maldives cannot: granite boulders, forested hills and rare wildlife. For a fuller look, see our guide to Seychelles private island resorts, compared.

North Island. Only 11 villas, reached in about 20 minutes by helicopter from Mahé. Why we'd choose it: giant tortoises roam freely, and the whole island is run around conservation.

Fregate Island Private. Sixteen private pool villas and seven beaches, a short flight from Mahé. Why we'd choose it: more beaches than villas, so finding your own cove is easy.

Six Senses Zil Pasyon, Félicité Island. The only resort on the island, covering less than a third of it. Why we'd choose it: a spa set among granite boulders, about 20 minutes by helicopter from Mahé.

Denis Private Island. Twenty-three cottages, about 30 minutes by plane from Mahé. Why we'd choose it: an island farm supplies the kitchen, and the pace is wonderfully simple.

French Polynesia: The Brando and Bora Bora's motus

The Brando, Tetiaroa. Thirty-five villas on the atoll Marlon Brando bought in 1960, about 20 minutes from Tahiti by the resort's own air service. Why we'd choose it: each villa has a plunge pool and beach access, and the island is protected by its own conservation society.

One practical note: flights to Tetiaroa run in daylight only. If you land in Papeete late in the afternoon, plan a night in Tahiti first.

The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, Motu Ome'e. Guests arrive by the hotel's own boat from Bora Bora's airport. Why we'd choose it: classic overwater villas, a lagoonarium for gentle snorkeling, and a resort well known for weddings and honeymoons.

Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts, Motu Tautau. The first Relais & Châteaux property in French Polynesia, facing Bora Bora across the water. Why we'd choose it: a quieter alternative, with drift snorkeling in the nearby Coral Garden.

Bali: add a private island to your trip

Bali itself has no private island resorts. It does make a fine starting point for one.

Amanwana, Moyo Island. The only resort on a nature and marine reserve island off Sumbawa, with 17 luxury tents. Why we'd choose it: a seaplane from Bali, its own dive center and a sense of real wilderness after Bali's bustle.

Santorini and the Amalfi Coast: different kinds of privacy

Neither Santorini nor the Amalfi Coast has a bookable private island resort. The Li Galli islands off Positano are privately owned and not open to stay.

Privacy here comes another way: a cliffside suite with its own pool, or a day on a chartered boat to quiet coves. Many couples pair a few nights in Santorini or on the Amalfi Coast with a longer island stay elsewhere.

Choosing the right island for your milestone

For the most romance: Soneva Jani or Cheval Blanc Randheli.

For the smallest, most personal stay: Kudadoo or North Island.

For nature and wildlife: Fregate, Denis or The Brando.

For an easier journey: Gili Lankanfushi or the St. Regis Bora Bora.

For adventure with comfort: Amanwana.

Rates vary by season, villa type and length of stay, and some islands include meals and activities while others do not. Your advisor confirms current rates and inclusions before you book.

Planning tips for a milestone stay

Tell the resort about your occasion when you book. Small islands love to mark a birthday or anniversary, and the best moments are arranged in advance.

Allow at least five nights. The journey takes time, and you will want a few slow days once you arrive.

Check transfer times for your flights. Seaplanes and small planes fly in daylight, so a late arrival may need an overnight stop.

When to go

In the Maldives, the drier northeast monsoon runs from about December to April. In the Seychelles, April to May and October to November are usually calmest. French Polynesia is drier from May to October. For Bali and Amanwana, the dry season runs from about April to October.
