Best Time to Visit Santorini for Sunsets Without the Crowds

When to visit Santorini for calm caldera sunsets: the best months, quieter viewpoints, and hotels where your own terrace is the best seat on the island.

By Luxe Beach Retreats·October 31, 2026

Santorini's sunset is one of the most famous in the world. That is exactly the problem. On a summer evening in Oia, the lanes and walls fill with people long before the sun goes down.

The good news is that a calm, unhurried sunset is still possible. It comes down to three choices: the month you travel, where you watch from, and where you stay.

Why the crowds build

Santorini is a small island, and in summer many visitors arrive at once. Cruise ships add to the busiest hours. On peak days in 2023 and 2024, between 11,000 and 17,000 cruise passengers came ashore.

Since then, the island has limited cruise arrivals to 8,000 passengers a day. Greece also now charges cruise passengers a landing fee, highest from June to September. Both have helped.

Even so, July and August remain the busiest months. Ferries are full, top restaurants book up early, and Oia's sunset draws large crowds every evening.

The best months for quieter sunsets

For most couples, the sweet spots are May, June, September and October.

May brings warm days and wildflowers, with cool breezes early in the month. Much of the island has fully reopened by the week after Greek Easter.

June is warm and still manageable. Many long-time visitors call it their favorite month.

September and October are our pick for sunsets. Beach spots and café tables are easier to find, and the evenings are still warm. Expect cooler breezes late in October, when some businesses begin to close for the season.

From November to April, the island is very quiet. Many hotels and tavernas close, ferries are fewer, and days can be cool and stormy. It can be beautiful, but it suits a reflective winter trip more than a sunset honeymoon.

Choose your viewpoint

Oia is not the only place to watch the sun go down. Some of the loveliest views are elsewhere, and far calmer.

Skaros Rock, Imerovigli. A short walk out to the rock gives wide, open views across the caldera toward Oia. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring water and a light jacket.

Firostefani. The path toward Fira has small alcoves where you can sit with a view of the caldera and the island of Thirasia. People spread out along the path rather than gathering in one place.

Akrotiri Lighthouse. At the island's southern tip, the lighthouse looks out over open sea. It is far from the main towns, so it stays quiet. Stay after dark and the stars come out, with very little light nearby.

Pyrgos. This hilltop village sits about 565 meters up, with views across the whole island. The Monastery of Prophet Elijah is close by.

From the water. A sunset sail lets you watch from the sea, often with dinner and a glass of wine on board.

A gentle sunset evening

Here is how we like to spend a sunset evening in Santorini. Rest through the warmest part of the afternoon, by the pool or on your terrace. About an hour before sunset, walk to a quieter viewpoint, or simply pour a drink where you are.

Watch the light change over the caldera. Then wait. As the crowds drift away, the sky often deepens into pink and violet. Walk to dinner as the lanes empty, and choose a table that looks out over the caldera lights.

It is an evening that asks nothing of you, which is exactly the point. For a honeymoon or milestone anniversary, ask your hotel about a private sunset dinner on your terrace.

Or let your terrace be the view

The calmest sunset of all is the one from your own terrace. A caldera-view room means you can watch in peace, then stroll to dinner once the lanes have emptied.

Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection in Imerovigli has just 20 rooms and suites, each with a caldera sunset view. Its infinity pool looks across to Nea Kameni, and Skaros Rock sits right opposite. Why we'd choose it: a small, peaceful hotel with Santorini's sunset at your door and none of Oia's crush.

Katikies sits on the cliff in Oia, near the main promenade but set back from the sunset crowds. It has three infinity pools, and every room has its own terrace. Why we'd choose it: Oia's famous view without joining the crowd to see it.

Canaves Oia Suites offers modern luxury in traditional cave-house alcoves carved into the cliff. Why we'd choose it: classic Oia character with a calm, contemporary feel.

Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort in Megalochori is built around a 400-year-old winery, with its own vineyard wines and a private beach. Why we'd choose it: a quiet wine-village base for couples happy to watch the sunset from a sailboat instead.

Rates vary by season and room type. Your advisor confirms current rates and availability when you plan.

A few simple tips

Plan around the cruise ships. Late morning on busy cruise days is when the Fira-to-Oia path and Oia's viewpoints are most crowded. Explore early or late in the day instead.

Stay a little longer. The sky often keeps its color well after the sun has dipped below the horizon, just as many people are leaving.

Book dinner ahead. In high season, the best caldera-view tables go quickly.

Bring a layer. Evenings on the caldera can be breezy, especially in spring and autumn.

Try a different village each night. One evening at your hotel, one at Skaros Rock, one at the lighthouse. Each sunset feels different.

When to go

For calm sunsets and warm evenings, aim for late May to June, or September to October. July and August are the hottest and busiest months. Many luxury hotels open from around April and close in late October or November. Katikies, for example, is usually open from April to November. Your advisor can confirm opening dates for your chosen hotel.
