Inside the guide
In the Maldives, color is depth. The palest turquoise marks a sandbank or shallow reef flat; a sudden band of indigo often means a channel where current brings nutrients, fish, and sometimes mantas.
The best snorkeling is rarely directly in front of your villa. Look for the pale blue fingers that reach into darker water — these are reef crests where coral thrives and reef sharks patrol at dawn.
Ask your villa host for the house reef map, and go out at high tide when the water is clearest and the current is gentle. Early morning, before the wind rises, is when the lagoon is most mirror-still.
