Where to Stay in Bali for a Luxury Couples Trip

Ubud's jungle valleys or the clifftops of Uluwatu and Jimbaran: how to choose, and the luxury resorts worth booking.

By Luxe Beach Retreats·October 8, 2026

Bali is two trips in one. Inland, around Ubud, you wake to river gorges, rice terraces and the sound of water. On the coast, you get clifftops, long sunsets and the Indian Ocean. Where you stay shapes the whole holiday.

For most couples, the answer is both: a few nights in the jungle, then a few by the sea. Here is how to choose, and the resorts we would book in each area. Rates vary by season and villa type, and your advisor will confirm current rates and availability for you.

Ubud and the jungle: for culture, calm and green views

Ubud sits in the hills of central Bali, about 40 kilometers from the airport. It is the island's cultural heart, with temples, craft villages and rice terraces close by. The finest resorts sit just outside town, many of them in the Ayung River valley, where the loudest sounds are birds and running water.

The hills run a little cooler than the coast. This is the place for spa days, gentle walks, cooking classes and quiet dinners. There is no beach here, so think of Ubud as the restful, soulful half of your trip.

Where to stay in Ubud:

  • Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan. You arrive across a footbridge to a lotus pond on the roof, then step down into the Ayung River valley.
  • Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. Pool villas in the river gorge look over the water and rice paddies, and dinner can be served in private bamboo pods.
  • Capella Ubud. A Bill Bensley-designed camp of just over twenty luxury tents in the Keliki Valley, each with its own saltwater plunge pool.
  • COMO Shambhala Estate. A 23-acre wellness retreat above the Ayung River, with yoga, Pilates and meditation included in your stay.
  • Hoshinoya Bali. Japanese calm meets Balinese landscape, with villas set along ancient subak water canals.

Uluwatu: for cliffs, sunsets and the ocean

Uluwatu is on the Bukit Peninsula in the far south. Here the land ends in tall limestone cliffs above the Indian Ocean. The resorts look straight out to sea, and the evening light is some of the best on the island.

One thing to know: beaches here usually sit at the foot of the cliffs, reached by steps or a lift. If you want to walk from your villa straight onto the sand, Jimbaran may suit you better.

Where to stay in Uluwatu:

  • Bulgari Resort Bali. Italian design on the clifftop, with an inclinator lift down to a private beach.
  • Alila Villas Uluwatu. Striking modern villas with private pools that seem to hang over the ocean.
  • Six Senses Uluwatu. The newest of the clifftop group, with cliffside villas and a strong wellness program.

Jimbaran: for an easy beach stay

Jimbaran Bay curves along the coast close to the airport, with a long, tree-lined beach. It is a relaxed choice for the start or the end of a trip, when you do not want a long drive.

  • Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay. Thatched-roof villas, each with a private pool, set above the bay about 15 minutes from the airport.

Seminyak: for dining and a livelier beach

Seminyak is the place for couples who like to walk out to dinner, browse boutiques and watch the sunset from a beach bar. It is busier than the other areas, so it suits a short stay best.

  • The Legian Seminyak. An all-suite hotel right on the beach, with restaurants and shops within walking distance.

How to split your time

On a trip of ten nights or so, many couples spend four nights in Ubud and five or six by the sea. Starting inland lets you settle into the time change somewhere peaceful. Ending on the coast gives you a few slow beach days before the long flight home.

Allow for travel time. The drive from the airport to Ubud can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. Plan nothing important for your arrival afternoon, and let your advisor arrange a private driver for each move.

Which area suits your trip?

  • A honeymoon: Ubud for romance and privacy, then Uluwatu for clifftop sunsets.
  • A milestone anniversary: a river-view villa in Ubud, then a quiet beach stay in Jimbaran.
  • A wellness or retirement trip: a longer stay in Ubud, with spa days and yoga built in, and a few easy days by the sea.
  • A celebration with great dining: finish with a few nights in Seminyak.

Before you go

Entry rules for Bali have changed in recent years, so it helps to prepare early. US travelers need a visa, either a visa on arrival or an e-VOA applied for online before you fly. Each currently costs IDR 500,000 and allows a 30-day stay, which can be extended once.

You will also complete the All Indonesia digital arrival card within three days before your flight, and pay Bali's tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person through the official Love Bali website or app. Your passport should be valid for at least six months. Rules can change, so your advisor will confirm the current requirements before you travel.

When to go

The dry season runs from about April to October. It brings the most reliable sunshine and the clearest water for swimming and snorkeling. June and July are the busiest months.

From November to March, the rainy season brings heavy showers, often in the afternoon, along with lusher scenery, fewer visitors and lower rates. The heaviest rain tends to fall from January to mid-April.

Note one date: Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls on March 8, 2027. For 24 hours the whole island goes quiet. The airport closes and guests stay within their hotel. Some couples find it magical. Others prefer to plan around it.
